Barriere has a small city centre consisting of basic shopping, medical and professional services, a few restaurants, building centre, Interior Savings Credit union and other smaller businesses. Barriere does have both an elementary and secondary school in the community servicing it's students. Barriere has urban residential properties and rural acreages, it is known for it's beautiful scenery, white sand beaches on it's lakes and world class recreational activities such as snowmobiling and ATV riding.
The main area of Barriere is home to most of the residents. Properties close to the Barriere centre typically are under one acre in size. As you travel further from the centre there are more acreage properties that range in size.
Barriere draws a number of tourists into the community in the warmer months. Nearby North and East Barriere lakes have recreational properties that are heavily used in the Spring and Summer months. And don't forget the very popular Thompson Valley Rodeo held in Barriere on the Labor Day long weekend annually.
The Barriere Lakes (East and North) are sought after lake communities for those interested in a recreational property. East Barriere does have a number of full time residents however is mostly seasonal. There is access to most of the areas of East Barriere Lake throughout the entire year. The Shuswap Highlands, The Sands and all of the residential properties on the southern side of the lake benefit from maintained roads. The Ridge resort does not have year round access as the road is not passable in the winter months due to snowfall. Many residents access the Ridge by snowmobile during those times.
North Barriere Lake is another popular spot. It is a bit further from Barriere than East lake however is less populated. There is a popular campsite at North Barriere which is enjoyed by many residents of the surrounding communities. North Barriere Lake properties are not serviced by BC Hydro and have to depend on generators or alternative sources of power.
